Final Recommendations
On August 28, 2024, the District One Natural Resources Assistance Council (NRAC) recommended two (2) projects to the Ohio Public Works Commission (OPWC) for Round FY 2025 of the Clean Ohio Green Space Conservation Program funding. Approximately 54 acres will be acquired and preserved in Cuyahoga County.
West Creek Conservancy, Watershed Divide Preserve Phase II
Total Project Cost: $451,000
Clean Ohio Award: $226,000
Acquisition Amount: 25 Acres
The Watershed Divide Preserve Project is a 25-acre acquisition project that straddles Cities of Brecksville Broadview Heights and spans both the Furnace Run and East Branch Baldwin Creek Watersheds. The project site is adjacent to other protected lands and contains mature forests and Category III wetland complexes, as well as State threatened/endangered bat species. Acquiring this 25-acre parcel will create a 100-acre conservation area along this precipice area—a watershed divide/headwater conservation initiative.
Cleveland Metroparks, Euclid Creek Reservation Expansion
Total Project Cost: $8,054,413
Clean Ohio Award: $5,054,413
Acquisition Amount: 29 Acres
The Euclid Creek Reservation Expansion includes the acquisition of 29 acres of lakefront property on the shores of Lake Erie and adjacent to the Cleveland Metroparks’ Euclid Creek Reservation in the City of Cleveland. This project will help protect the region’s lakefront and provide safe, year-round public access to Lake Erie for nearby residents and visitors. After acquisition, the property will be maintained as part of the lakefront portion of Cleveland Metroparks Euclid Creek Reservation thus expanding the protected land on the lakefront and creating more opportunities for access to and exploration of the shores of Lake Erie. The property has important habitat for migratory birds and bats.
Preliminary Recommendations
The District One NRAC scored the two (2) green space acquisition applications for Fiscal Year (FY) 2025: the Euclid Beach Expansion Project, submitted by the Cleveland Metroparks, and the Watershed Divide II, submitted by the West Creek Conservancy. Both projects met the minimum total points needed to be eligible for funding.
Project Requests
The NRAC received two (2) applications from two (2) applicants for funding through the FY 2025 Ohio Public Works Commission (OPWC) Clean Ohio Green Space Conservation Program, requesting a total of $5,280,413. District One has approximately $5,454,153 in OPWC funding. This year all the projects submitted are greenspace acquisition projects.
