The Cleveland Heights Gateways & Wayfinding Signage Plan will develop a coordinated strategy for gateways and wayfinding to help residents and visitors navigate the community.

Background

As an inner ring suburb with 11 unique commercial districts, Cleveland Heights has a lot to offer residents and visitors. Building off previous work such as the City’s 2017 Master Plan, the Gateways & Wayfinding Signage Plan will create a unified strategy to facilitate coordinated citywide signage. This Plan is an initial step toward future design consultation and installation of a complete and coordinated citywide signage system.

Planning Process

The City of Cleveland Heights was awarded professional planning services through a competitive grant process from the Cuyahoga County Planning Commission Community. The Cleveland Heights Gateways & Wayfinding Signage Plan consists of four phases:

signage inventory iconSignage Inventory: The initial phase involves conducting an inventory on existing gateway and wayfinding locations within the City of Cleveland Heights. This includes both walking and driving audits of key areas, as well as aerial mapping analyses to verify signage locations.

best practices iconOutline of Best Practices:
Concurrent with the first phase, County Planning will research and outline current best practices surrounding gateways and wayfinding. This will include location, design, typologies, height, materials, content, layout, information, accessibility, and other key indicators.

recommended locations & typologies iconRecommended Locations & Typologies:
Building off phases 1 and 2, County Planning will create a series of ‘User Maps’ showcasing how recommended gateway and wayfinding locations relate to community destinations and assets. This will also include a series of recommended signage typologies that will be used in future signage efforts by the City.

final plan iconFinal Plan
: The final phase involves assembling all the previous phases into one cohesive planning document that can be utilized by the City of Cleveland Heights for future design consultation and installation.
